SCHOLARS INVIGORATED THROUGH CAREER DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITY

With the purpose of mobilizing the young people, Zendesk bequeathed the ANCOP Scholars with Career Development Program last November 6, 2017. The said event was held at their office in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig.

Zendesk is a global software company that connects business with customers. With the purpose of empowering people through their corporate social responsibility program, they organize their staff to be volunteers for their non-profit partners. Through this, the team was given a chance to spend time with their partner foundations and extend themselves through the stories and skills they partake.

The Career Development Program is a project of Zendesk’s CSR Department. Ms. Joanna Zuñiga, CSR Regional Program Manager for Zendesk, shared that it is a platform to close the gap when people talk about hiring and the young people’s preparation through looking for different opportunities that will equip them as they build their careers.

The concept of the program is leaning on the “Headstart Program” from their London Office, where students undergo mentoring and are being connected to the work and organizations. This is what Zendesk has catered during the visit of the scholars to their place.

The first part was the familiarization of what Zendesk is and the services they are offering. They also had the chance to see the set of work of each company’s department through the office tour; where they also met the staff and were able to relate themselves to.

In the afternoon, the volunteers conducted the Career Development Session; where they had shared their journey and inspired students to persevere to find the career where they can be passionate about. The activity also offered a workshop on creating their resumes or curriculum vitae and was given tips for interviews that they might encounter in the future. Lastly, the students were able to hear a talk from Ms. May Manaog of People Operations Department, where students were able to know the factors that may affect their career development. They were also encouraged to have their motivations and convictions for their passion in life. The program ended with her reminder to pray, persevere and to always move forward.

The activity paved way for the students to be inspired and motivated. Kara Ruel, a third year BS Administration student and ANCOP Scholar from Pasig is one of the participants in the said program. She shared that as she anticipates stepping into her last year in college, she thinks about her training and the “how-to-dos” during an application and interview. With the session she encountered, she was certain that her questions in mind were answered. Her mother, Sis. Racquel Ruel was thankful that her daughter and the other scholars who participated were able to have the opportunity to be prepared for the next chapter of their lives.

Ms. Zuñiga, in a separate interview, shared that it is a great experience to have the scholars over. It is a first and it is a gateway for diversity and mobilization to the staff. She converses that they definitely want to be useful in many ways they can and they want to see more for the scholars, not just through the grant but also through supporting them in their career path.

Her advice to the students: “…take those chances, take those opportunities. I know it’s scary, but if it gives you the advantage to move ahead, take it. Sometimes, the short sacrifices pay off in the long run. Be brave about your choices. Pray that it happens.”

Zendesk is looking forward to do more, especially in offering workshops that will help the students be guided as they journey to their chosen field. Through the set of expertise they have, they sought to utilize it to gear people who are building their own careers.
