A car crash in Argentina killed three members of Pope Francis’ extended family Tuesday — including his 8-month-old and 2-year-old grand-nephews — and seriously injured another, police said.
A truck struck a car driven by the pope’s nephew Emanuel Horacio Bergoglio on a highway in Cordoba at about 12:30 a.m., Cordoba police spokeswoman Carina Ferreyra said. The dead were identified as Valeria Carmona, 39, Antonio Bergoglio, 8 months, and Joseph Bergoglio, 2 years.
According to the an NBC report:
Police in Cordoba said that a call came in just after midnight about an accident involving a cargo truck and a Chevy Spin. The Chevy driver – Francis’ 35-year-old nephew, Emanuel Bergoglio – is in intensive care in an induced coma after suffering a variety of injuries including liver trauma and a fractured femur, police said. Bergoglio’s wife, 36-year-old Carmona Valeria, and eight-month-old son Jose died at the scene. Bergoglio’s two-year-old, Antonio, later died at the hospital, police added.
The accident occurred between the cities of Rosario and Cordoba, apparently as the family was returning to Buenos Aires following a holiday weekend.”
Vatican spokesman Rev Federico Lombardi said in a statement “The Pope was informed about the tragic accident. He is deeply pained,” adding Pope Francis had asked “all who share in his grief to unite with him in prayer.”
On January 12, just as everyone was still on the height of celebrating the start of a new decade, 2020 brought us one of its surprises no one expected—the Taal Volcano eruption. On its first day of volcanic activity, it spewed tons of ashes that greatly affected Batangas, and has reached nearby provinces and even parts of Metro Manila. This caused a lot of damage to the homes and livelihood of the residents, displacing thousands of them to different evacuation centers all over Batangas province.
